Summer was a bit of a bumpy ride for Tairāwhiti Gisborne as our communities dealt with Cyclone Gabrielle and its aftermath. The good news is we’re coming out the otherside and are open for business. We invite you to come and experience the beauty and hospitality of our special place on the East Coast.

You can fly directly into Gisborne from Auckland and Wellington with Air New Zealand, or take a scenic drive through State Highway 2 and enjoy the stunning surrounds of the Waioeka Gorge along the way. We’re excited that Highway 35 is now open for those road trippers, but keep an eye on Waka Kotahi for any roading updates. If travelling around the East Cape, be sure to use our Highway 35 App showcasing all there is to see and do around the coast from accomodation, activities and must visit locations.

In Tairāwhiti you can enjoy some truly unique experiences, from stingray feeding on the reef at Dive Tatapouri, to railbike excursions across rural plains, vineyards and historic railbridges. Nature-lovers cannot miss Eastwoodhill, the national aboretum with an incredible collection of tree species from around the globe. On the outskirts of Gisborne you’ll find some great wineries to sample a local drop. Bushmere Estate has incredible wine varieties to enjoy as well as an onsite restaurant, while the Matawhero Winery is a picture-perfect stop for a tasting, gourmet platters and boutique acommodation among the vineyards. For a more active winery expereince, jump on two wheels with Cycle Gisborne who will provide all you need for a great day out amongst the vineyards.

Speaking of accommodation, there is plenty to choose from depending on your needs, whether its beachside luxury at Tatapouri Bay, or high-end comfort at Portside in the city.
