Take a breathtaking drive

Winding your way up along State Highway 35 with plenty of hidden gems along the way.

About a 90-minute drive from central Gisborne, Anaura Bay is a picture-perfect beach paradise. This small idyllic bay is surrounded by forest and coastal bush and the perfect spot to swim and surf. Enjoy a gorgeous hike along the Anaura Bay Walkway and soak up all the views.

Your journey further north takes you to stunning Tokomaru Bay and sitting pretty in the heart of the bay is the iconic Te Puka Tavern. Since 1873, Te Puka Tavern has been a welcoming sight for travellers looking for some delicious food and accommodation with the most beautiful views.

Tokomaru Bay offers good fishing (particularly by the old wharf near the freezing works) as well as camping on both the northern and southern ends of the bay. For a unique accommodation option, visitors can also stay at a heritage building in the township at an old NZ Post office.

There’s a Four Square shop for food and essentials as well as the famous Café 35 serving up its legendary paua pies.
